Helping Tomorrows Youth
December 4, 2009

Teaching workers skills and working safely is at the core of most unions hearts. So the opportunity to show those skills to approximately 1500 local youth was one to be missed. The United Association, local 527 and the Carpenters Union local 785, both made a big impact at the skills career fair at Bingeman park December 3rd. This fair held by both public and separate school boards brought together a variety of trades and companies to show youth today the opportunities that await them and the possibilities of a future in the skilled trades. Working with OYAP, (Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program) is something the United Association has done for some time now. Allowing Youth to visit their training hall and and work with retired members to teach them the rudiments of the piping trades. "Investing in today’s youth is something that the UA believes in strongly", said Business Manager John Germann, "they are our future and we need to teach them the safe way of working" The show was an unqualified success according to OYAP events coordinators.
